After the season is before the season

So you’ve made it through another winter season injury free, the skis gear is packed away and you're now thinking about what you're going to do this summer… Before your mind is totally on spring/summer-mode (if you are lucky enough to be in a sunny part of the world maybe this is a little easier…) we have a few tips for how to wrap up your winter, so that you can get a head start next winter.

In the words of a famous German football player “Nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel” – "After the game is before the game"! The more you invest in yourself before the season, the more you are going to get out of it.

  1. Skis - They have been your best friends the last few months- before you relegate them to the cellar for 6 months, give them some TLC- a good service and protective wax will ensure that they keep nice and snug through the summer months and don’t dry out, meaning they are in good condition for when the first snow comes at the start of next season (don’t forget to remove the protective wax at the start of the season!)

  2. Bumps and joys – What have you learned, improved or discovered this winter? What were the big achievements and what were the challenges? Grasp that energy and make a note whilst it’s fresh in your mind- this will help you to focus on what you want to get out of or improve upon next season- so that you don’t feel that you’re always starting from the same place each time a ski holiday comes around. Whether you feel ready to tackle off-piste for the first time or you want to try out other winter sports during the season. Top tip- create a folder on your computer and file also any pictures or videos of your skiing (these are great to share with ski instructors/ ski school/ ski camp organisers)

  3. After the season is before the season – Get it now?! Skiing is a sporting activity and a great compliment to a healthy active lifestyle. Do you want to take your skiing to the next level, avoid injury and improve overall fitness? Well, the good news is you have a good 6 months to get yourself ready and better still- the weather is going to be nicer to you, so you can get outside even more! Why not try hiking and mountain-biking- both great ways of keeping fit through the summer months and also working on building core strength, balance and stamina which are helpful for skiing.

  4. Check, repair, replace - Before you pack away all your ski clothes and gear, check it all and decide what to keep and what needs replacing. Was there anything you were missing this season? As NOW is the time to get it- outdoors stores and online have the best bargains at this time of year, so you get a whole lot more for your money. On another note, remove the batteries from the avalanche transponders and use them as spares for your TV remote. Best to start every season with fresh batteries.

  5. Early bird catches the worm - This is most definitely the case if you know what you want to do next season and where you want to go. Most ski companies offer great incentives for booking early, as they can then hold the best accommodation in the best spots. For you it means that you not only get to secure a great deal and a place on a possibly limited event, but you are guaranteed to get accommodation in top resorts and the ski experience you want. Furthermore, with a clear goal in sight you have the motivation to get yourself set for that holiday.
