Skiing and acrobatics in St Anton am Arlberg

London ski show prize draw winner visits St. Anton am Arlberg

Our London Ski Show prize draw winner Vikki Morton from London joined us in January for a weekend in the Arlberg. Here she shares with us a bit about herself, her weekend and her love of skiing.

1.What was your first great snow experience?

When I was 21 I spent Christmas in an Austrian resort near St Johann that was meant to be ski-in, ski-out…but there was hardly any snow. I remember learning on a very crowded glacier and coming away with some very colourful bruises! Fortunately it didn’t put me off and the Alps have been a lot snowier since.

2.What do you do when you’re not on the ski slopes?

I live in London and am having a lot of fun learning acrobatics with my partner Martin at circus school, testing my spatial awareness and doing tricks upside down. I’m also lucky enough to have a ballot entry to the London Marathon, which is motivating me to get out of bed and train through the winter.

3.What is your ski goal for this winter?

Like many people I think I’ve reached a bit of a plateau with my skiing. This winter I’d like to take it to the next level, which for me means more off-piste, moguls and challenging slopes. Ideally I’d like to get down in style rather than my current ‘survival skiing’ technique.

4.What was the highlight of your St. Anton ski weekend?

It’s hard to pick one highlight but a few things stand out for me. The 3rd or 4th run of the day with Ceri when I got my ski legs back, getting Martin on the slopes for the first time and pausing to admire the view when the snow clouds eventually cleared. The hotel (Anthony’s) was also one of the best I’ve ever stayed in and the après ski in the resort is of course amazing.

5.When is your next ski break? What are you looking forward to most?

I’m actually going to Tignes with a friend for a week at the end of January. Apart from just being back in the mountains again, I’m looking forward to the all-terrain ski course that we’ve booked on and challenging ourselves to go further and faster.

6.What is your favourite thing to do in the summer?

I try to spend as much time as possible outside. Probably my favourite thing is to escape London on my bike but I also like running and open water swimming so try to combine all three by doing triathlon events through the season.

7.Some words of wisdom that inspire you…

Don’t wait for the storms to pass, learn to dance in the rain!

A big thank you to the St Anton tourist board, Bergbahn and Intersport Arlberg for sponsoring this prize!
