Spring Ski Tips

Its not over yet!

The Spring is a great time to ski- less people on the slopes, longer days and better weather are just a few reasons to get out there!

Here are a few of our top tips for you to be enjoy springing forward on the slopes.

Ski smart

Get out before the crowds and make the most of freshly groomed slopes in the morning before the snow warms and turns heavier in the afternoon. For off-piste skiers this is the time of year to enjoy some glorious Firnschnee (corn snow that gives you the feeling of making turns on freshly groomed tracks).  Also use the sun as your guide- avoid icy hardpacked slopes until the sun has made its way onto them and follow the sun gradually around the mountain!

Ski & Spa

Turn this window of top ski conditions to your advantage and when the snow turns to slush, head to the spa for a few hours of R&R!

Aim high

Many of the higher resorts have top skiing conditions through until Mid-April e.g. Obergurgl- Hochgurgl, Ischgl, Kühtai, St. Anton am Arlberg in Austria as well as the glaciers- Sölden, Hintertux, Stubai, Pitztal, Zugspitze. With guaranteed snow at this time of year you will still be able to ski all day until the last lift.

Don’t forget the suncream

After many months of being covered up during the winter, your skin is going to be more sensitive to the sun, as well as being exposed to strong rays at altitude. That goes for your eyes too- don’t forget the goggles and sunglasses and use a suncream with a high SPF- we recommend factor 50 and keep reapplying throughout the day- unless you are going for the panda look!

Tune & wax up

With icy conditions first thing in the morning, make sure your skis edges are in good shape to grip on hard packed slopes. A good wax for spring skiing will also help you glide smoothly through softer snow conditions. Take them in to a sports store for a professional wax if you are unsure how to do this yourself.

Temperature and body control

With temperatures rising during the day it is difficult to know what to wear. Think like an onion - layers... A windproof jacket outer layer is great for keeping you warm as you cruise down the mountain, and you will probably only need a thermal layer under that. It’s worth packing a fleece that you can put on as a mid-layer if needed. It can be tempting in the warm weather to ski in T-shirts, remove the helmet and pack away the gloves but remember clothing isn’t just to keep you warm- the gear all protects you from injuring yourself. Keep safe!

And finally, smile and soak up this glorious time of year!
